When got a hold of Denise I found out that she lives almost around the corner from where I was staying in Vila Magdalena. We met at her apartment at noon. A bright and clutter-free apartment with a great view of the city. On the wall there was a medium format poster of Alex Gray that was given to Denise by her soul mate Valentine. It was a sunny summer day. She opened the parcel with great excitement and put it on her belly: “does it come with instructions?”. She mentioned that she has always been Valentine’s friend, and she promised to visit Toronto once the baby is born.
When we were young, maybe 15 years old, we decided to travel by ourselves to a small town called São Tomé das Letras, in Minas Gerais, Brazil. There were many waterfalls and trekkings to do and we used to spend the whole day walking in the woods. One day, when we came back from one of those trekkings, Val decided to have shower before me. Suddenly, I heard a scream with horror. It was Val calling my name. When I got into the toilet I saw her naked, with her hands opening her ass. She asked me, screaming, if there was a tick (carrapato) there. And, for my surprise, there it was: the tick. That day, I knew, I proved my friendship for her, I forgot my nausea, took all my courage and took the tick of her ass. She was relieved and very grateful, of course. That’s what friends are for, aren’t they? Denise

A diagram for a set of possibilities
Spelled in both English and Portuguese a line was drawn connecting the space between each of the letters in sequence using different colours for each language.
Notice the trajectories they trace, the linguistic coincidences and divergences, the shapes formed by their intersections.
