Social Plastics: Nail Party
Salas collaborated with a Vietnamese immigrant family of nail technicians, artist Mary Tremonte and music band LAL on Nail Party, a site-specific intervention in a gentrifying, historically immigrant Toronto neighbourhood. Nail technician Katherine Tran designed patterns that were reproduced by her older relatives during the performance and informed artist Mary Tremonte’s vinyl renditions for the installation. Nail Party utilized a small-scale and commodified art form to map diasporic geographies, generate creative exchange, and explore new avenues for engaging with issues of immigrant labour.
